Gnashroot Recant

Classification: Bog-bound Kruleboyz warband, extensively altered
Origin: Unknown; structure and equipment suggest failed sub-faction or splinter from a larger force
Common Locations: Gnarlwash Verge, particularly in sunken ruins and active marsh zones
Allegiance: Destruction, with unknown ritual elements

The Gnashroot Recant is a warband composed of Kruleboyz figures whose original skin and markings are completely obscured by swamp matter. Their bodies are coated in thick layers of peat, lichen, and bog scatter, forming a dense, uneven surface that masks any remaining heraldry or tribal identifiers. In many cases, only their weapons and shields remain visible, suggesting that the transformation—whether intentional or environmental—has fully overtaken their flesh.

The warband appears to operate within and around the Gnarlwash Verge, using the sunken terrain to their advantage. Rather than relying on stealth or speed, the Recant employs a slow, pressure-based advance. Reports indicate that they emerge from submerged terrain fully formed, moving in silence until contact is made. The bog coating muffles sound and may offer some resistance to minor hexing or warding effects, though this remains unconfirmed.

Each member still carries a skareshield and weapon consistent with Kruleboyz manufacture, but there are no consistent markings across the group. The lack of visible eyes, mouths, or skin beneath the bog matter has led some observers to question whether the figures remain alive in any traditional sense. However, they respond to threats, operate in formation, and show coordinated aggression consistent with trained fighters.

The meaning of “Recant” in the group’s name remains uncertain. Some field accounts link the warband to a failed promise, curse, or surrender—possibly related to the collapse of a larger force in the Verge. Others suggest the name was assigned after the fact by outside observers attempting to describe the warband’s behavior or origin.

There is no evidence of leadership within the Recant, though larger individuals occasionally appear during major engagements. Whether these serve tactical or ritual roles is unknown. No verbal communication has been recorded, and the group does not appear to interact with other Destruction-aligned forces in the region.

The Gnashroot Recant is treated with caution by other warbands. While slow-moving and irregular in form, they are difficult to track, and their appearance often signals the end of navigability in a given marsh. Once seen, they rarely disappear. Most accounts end the same way: the forest doesn't reject them, and the bog never gives them back.
